Tucked into the wall along the lightrail tracks at Surry Hills is a cosy restaurant that has Japanese cuisine and live Jazz every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday night (you can check out the upcoming lineup here ).

I definitely went for the live music at dinner, but there is also a lunch service that runs from 12pm-2:30pm Thursday to Sunday.

The live Jazz is on at 6:15pm-9:30pm so if you want to listen in you'll need to make a reservation (online only).

Something to be aware of is that there's a 10% surcharge on Saturday/Sunday (so if you're going to the Sunday live Jazz keep this in mind) and there's also a $40 cancellation fee if you don't let the restaurant know within 24 hours. So be sure to double and triple-check your calendars first.

I did actually end up going on a Sunday, and most of the patrons were sitting in the front room (photographed below), but there is also a Red Room and a Terrace Room which can be booked out for private events (25 people for the Terrace Room and 36 people for the Red Room). Although if you have a group of more than 10 people you will need to order from the set menus.

In the dark, it can be easy to miss this restaurant but it's a short 5 minute walk from the Surry Hills lightrail stop or a 5 minute walk from Central Station. Either way, it's very convenient to get there by public transport (but parking will be a lot harder). There is limited parking around the Surry Hills area, and most of it is for 2 hours only, so I would strongly recommend taking public transport to get here.

The atmosphere was warm and upbeat, and although the restaurant was pretty packed full of people AND there was live music playing, you didn't need to shout to be heard. The live music was definitely a highlight, and although the food is enough to draw you in, I really would only be turning up when there's the live band providing those extra good vibes.

Onto the food! One of the more novel dishes was the naked sushi. We ordered it not knowing what to expect. Even now I'm not 100% sure if we ate it correctly; I made mine into little sushi on my plate, but perhaps you were simply meant to eat it out of the bowl with a spoon and nibble on the seaweed on the side. To each their own I guess, but it was definitely a fun date night experience to figure out how to eat this dish.

I'll admit that it was only halfway through our order that we realised that we had almost exclusively ordered deep-fried dishes (oops). It was all delicious, but I will definitely try and order a more balanced meal next time as by the end I was definitely deep-fried out!

The fried chicken was so juicy and tender, of all the deep-fried options I tried I would back this dish. I know you can get fried chicken almost anywhere these days, but this was particularly good and was probably my favourite dish of the night.

For the vegetarians in the group, this was a hearty curry dish (it was a really nice curry sauce) with breaded pumpkin (instead of the regular chicken slice). I think this would be a great and filling option for vegetarian friends (whilst everyone else eats that fried chicken I mentioned earlier).

You can find the full menu here but there are also daily specials which the staff will inform you of.

Overall I did find the menu to be a little on the pricier side (but also that's what you get in Surry Hills), but the food was tasty and filling (especially if you've ordered four deep-fried dishes). Plus, you can't argue with a full restaurant full of smiling faces and full bellies. I would strongly recommend coming to see the live music (keeping in mind the Sunday surcharge).
