I went to a Jason Mraz concert last Tuesday night, actually my first concert in Sydney. I had no idea what the experience would be like and if I would even like the music since I wasn't a big fan nor had I ever spent an afternoon listening to his music. I had agreed to go along mainly for the experience of being at a concert in Sydney.

We got there at 6:45pm. With the concert set to start at 7:00pm I was surprised by the lack of lines and the tiny number of people at the door, I thought surely we are early.

The concert hall was enormous and made me feel tiny and small. I remember thinking what a feeling it would be to perform in front of a packed stadium where people had travelled miles solely to watch and be in your presence. If that doesn't make someone feel special nothing else can.

My friend wanted to switch places with me for a better view and it's interesting how that unintentional switch added greatly to my music knowledge.

A few minutes after making the switch a young guy who had travelled all the way from Perth to see the Zac Brown Band sat right next to me, a band I had never even heard of before. He had left everything behind, bought a ticket for a friend (who had backed out last minute) and had been determined to see the Zac Brown Band live everywhere they performed. This was true dedication to music and showed real commitment.

The Zac Brown Band finally came on after much anticipation for someone to perform. There they were five ordinary looking guys who looked like they had met years ago but might not exactly be Hollywood stars.

Then they started to sing and the guy next to me went absolutely crazy. He jumped up and down, attempted to dance in his seat and at moments 'couldn't contain his excitement'.

The band surprised me; they sang a bunch of original/cover heartbreak songs and represented the country genre well. I enjoyed the performance and thought they had nice voices.

Jason Mraz was finally up and his personality shone through every song. As someone who didn't really know his music, I was mesmerized and every song was a 'feel good and be good to yourself' mantra.

I feel he lacked in the performance department but then I guess his songs weren't songs where he could move around much and really make it a visual spectacular. Songs like ' 93 Million Miles, The Woman I love and I Won't Give Up' were especially nice to see performed live where as his ultimate hit ' I'm yours' just didn't do it for me (but maybe that's just me).

Leaving the concert I knew this wasn't my favourite kinda music, I still do prefer pop sensations and commercial music types but it was nice to try something new.
