Learn the unique art of Japanese paper cutting art

This winter, you are invited to enjoy a relaxed morning immersing yourself in Japanese culture, learning a unique Japanese art form on Saturday 28th July (10am to 12.30pm - workshop only*).

Presented by Robyn Cottew of, this one-day interactive workshop is suitable for all, even those who don't think they are artistic or creative. Students often find this art form relaxing and meditative and the only skill required is enthusiasm.

Japanese Paper Cutting Art consists of cutting layers of different papers to reveal designs and Robyn learnt this traditional art form when she lived in Yamagata Ken and in Tokyo for six and a half years.

Robyn is a qualified Interior Designer, whose career has taken many turns. She has travelled extensively through Japan and is fascinated by Japanese culture and traditional crafts. This interest led to her setting up a webshop,, which sells unique and high-quality Japanese designed goods which otherwise don't get global exposure.

Whilst is Tokyo, Robyn met Yamamoto Hiromi San, who taught her Japanese Paper Cutting Art. Yamamoto San's style is a unique version of kirigame (traditional paper cutting) and Robyn became an assistant teacher under her guidance.

Yamamoto San gifted Robyn with designs which told stories about Japanese culture and upon her return to Melbourne, she has continued to develop her skills. Her work often utilises Japanese washi paper and chiyogami (patterned paper), coloured paper, fabric, sequins and diamantes and has been exhibited at the Japanese Consulate in Melbourne, the Japanese Festival in Box Hill, and is currently on display in Fuji Tei Restaurant.

All are welcome to come along and take part in this immersive Japanese culture experience.
