A quiet oasis awaits you in the heart of downtown Phoenix. The 3.5 acres of the Japanese Friendship Garden provide space for a contemplative stroll. As you enter, a tranquil pond idles just beyond a Kasuga stone lantern. As you wander the path, various delights come into view.

Hundreds of large koi in various shades of orange inhabit the pond. As you pass over the curved bridge, they swim to the surface of the water and open their mouths looking for snacks from passersby. Of course, don't feed them anything not provided by the garden. After the small island, you cross the Yatsuhashi, a bridge shaped like a zig-zag that is meant to slow your pace.

As you continue on the path, the fourteen-foot waterfall reveals itself. The stone harbor boasts one of the best viewing spots. This is also a good spot for gazing at the lily pads and watching the ducks.

Walking, further along, brings you to the stream and tea house garden. Fifty varieties of plants and many well-placed rocks complete the atmosphere of beauty and calm. You can complete the entire path in ten minutes or spend an hour meandering and pausing to meditate.

The mayor of Himeji, Japan proposed the garden in 1987. He wanted to cement the ties of friendship between the two sister cities of Himeji and Phoenix. The Garden continues to foster an understanding of the history and culture of Japan. Further your experience by attending a tea ceremony or one of their events.
