Rediscover the highs and lows of the human spirit

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." Charles Dickens may have penned this in the Tale of Two Cities, but it is true too for Joe, a divorcee starting life anew back in his hometown of Hakodate. You may not have been to his harbour town, but it has a way of getting under your skin. The unlikely hero of the film Over the Fence is one of a spectrum of films featured in the Japanese Film Festival, now in its 21st year. As one reviewer has said "The Japanese Film Festival is an excellent opportunity to enjoy some of the best of Japanese cinema, and there's always something to please everybody."

Minakuchi Castle
Shiga Prefecture, home to the Ninja heartland of Iga depicted in the movie "MUMON: The Land of Stealth"

Along with In this Corner of the World and Her Love Boils Bathwater, three movies from the Kinema Junpo Top 10 for 2016 have made the shortlist for this festival, which closes on 29 October.

This year, you can select a five-film pass for $75, a saving of over $15. You can share this with friends or mix or match films with your self.
