The OzAsia Film Festival is showcasing 9 brilliant films made in Japan in the last 2 years. Here is just a taste of the diverse films:
CONFESSIONS by Tetsuya Nakashima, director of Kamikaze Girls and Memories of Matsuko was a huge box office hit in Japan last year.
This is a great example of how the Japanese film makers can alienate and disturb. Moriguchi sensei (teacher) is obsessed with finding the murderer of her four year old female student. Moriguchi finds obsession, revenge and confessions.
GANTZ 1 (they are already planning more) directed Shinsuke Sato (2011) is based on a Manga. It has style to boot. This is a fabulous story of a couple that die in a train crash, and rather than become standard ghosts, become gaming characters fighting weird stuff in cyberspace.
TOUMA directed by Izuru Narushima (2010). Dr Touma chooses a tree change to a small city hospital when a patient is admitted with cirrhosis of the liver requiring an immediate transplant. Meanwhile another brain-dead patient is admitted who happens to be a match. The doctor has a moral and legal dilemma, but he needs to decide quickly.
AKUN directed by Sang Il-Lee (2010) is about a troubled young man who murders and the ordinary young woman who falls in love with him on the internet. It seems likely it was inspired by the Facebook killer who was in the headlines in Japan a few years ago, in any case it was seethingly believable.
