Ever wanted to experience the eccentric and electric atmosphere of the Japanese music scene? Now you can – for free. The very best of Tokyo's vibrant underground nightlife and culture is coming to Australia in April 2014.

Bands big in Japan bringing it in our backyard

On Thursday 3 April the Esplanade Hotel in St Kilda, or Epsy as it is fondly known, will host Melbourne's first Japan Music Festival thanks to festival promoter, Sonny King. Take two of the festival for Melbourne, and its "grand finale jam", will go down at The Retreat Hotel on Sunday April 6. In addition to Thursday's line-up, this final show will include a performance by special Japanese guests from Australia, a light show and an after party in the beer garden, complete with performer appearances.

With the line-up including Japanese pop/rock anime music group, Jill ; grunge/shoe-gaze/industrial outfit, 101A ; Kaimokujisho , whose sound is likened to Korn and The Deftones; and instrumental rock solo guitarist, Sparky Quano , Japan Music Festival is definitely something different and not to be missed, especially if you have any interest in Japanese culture. While you may never have heard of any of these bands, they are immensely popular in Tokyo and big in Japan .

The line-up

Expect high energy pop and lyrical ballads from Jill's singer, Eri. 101A overlays rough, heavily distorted instruments with delicate, melodic female vocals.

Creating entire instrumental pieces, including the rhythm tracks and percussion, from a single guitar, Sparky Quano's sound is described as haunting and progressive with occasional ghostly whispers.

But, wait... there's more!

This sample of Japan's most revered live J-Pop, J-Rock and J-Alt bands will also be visiting Sydney and Brisbane in 2014, with the city's hosting their own Japan Music Festival on 4 April at The Roller Den and 5 April at Ric's Bar respectively. Feel special Melbourne and Brisbane – Sydneysiders have to pay!

In addition to the festival itself, selected JB Hi-Fi stores will be featuring in-store appearances/instrument demonstrations from the artists involved if you wish to get up close and personal.

Did I mention it's free?
