Imagine yourself stepping into the world of Jane Austen, dashingly dressed in a glorious Regency outfit, thrilling at the witty company and taking part in the dances. This October, you shall go to the Ball!

To celebrate the bicentenary of Jane Austen's novel, Persuasion, Brisbane dance specialists Early Colonial Dance have arranged a magical night at Sandgate Town Hall on Saturday 13 October.

Tickets for the ball include entry, dancing to a costumed live band, entertainment and a Regency supper. All the dances will be called by the experienced Heather Clarke, so you will be able to lightly trip around the floor in true Austen style.

If you have never danced this style before, Heather Clarke will be running four evenings of dancing lessons in Samford starting in September, so that you can shine at the Ball with added grace and skill. You can attend the lessons without a partner or any experience; beginners and children are welcome. The cost is only $10 a lesson. The dances are fun and social, and range from elegant to boisterous! Book for the dancing lessons through Moreton Bay Regional Council's website .

On the night of the ball, you will need a costume. Regency and 18th Century costumes can be hired in Brisbane, or if you sew, patterns may be acquired on the internet. The look is empire line. Dresses have a rounded, low neckline and high waist just below the bust, which is a flattering look and comfortable to wear. Don't forget your dance card and pencil! Gentlemen wear breeches and waistcoats and may enjoy handsome accessories such as top hats and cravats. There are some good images from last year's ball to give you the right idea at festival photos.

You don't need to come with a dance partner and everyone is welcome. The organisers are expecting demand for tickets to be high. Book tickets to the ball here .

In the words of Jane Austen: "There were more dancers than the room could conveniently hold, which is enough to constitute a good ball at any time."
