Jane and Kel Go To Hell is a dark comedy written and directed by Queensland writer, Steve Pirie. I can't say I quite followed the storyline as it was a mishmash of events. Jane, played by Kalya Robinson, whose self-esteem is down the toilet declares to the audience that she's living proof that there is a hell. She is unappreciated and bullied at work and on the brink of being fired and rehired by way of a demotion, disguised as a promotion as an unpaid intern. Wanting to keep the last shred of her dignity, Jane quits her job only to later realise that she's going to need another roommate to help pay the rent.


Kel, (Emma Black) her party-head roommate suggests the best way to clear their heads in these situations is to sweat it out at an aerobics class, followed by a cheeseburger gorge and an all-night shots bender complete with Karaoke and slam poetry fest. These antics were quite hilarious. I'm not quite sure if the result of this bender prompted Roy (Daniel Simpson) to appear out of the blue as the self-proclaimed perfect roommate candidate, but it certainly didn't take him long to unpack his few items from his reusable, environmentally friendly plastic bag.


Daniel Simpson stole the show as Roy, the mild-mannered, goofy, demon. What I didn't understand was why he came to take Jane to hell apart from the symbolism of her falling into a deep depression and having to find her way back to the land of living.

Jane and Kel Go To Hell is fun to watch. Apart from a dodgy storyline that didn't quite hit the mark, writer/director, Steve Pirie, and his cast and crew managed to pull off an amusing production with some hilarious antics. The set, lighting and sound are simplistic and cleverly designed to cater to this touring show. The show has a MA15 rating and contains adult themes, coarse language, sexual references and use of a haze and smoke machine.
