Her passion for fresh produce and desire to support farmers directly saw the first Jan Powers Farmers Market come to life at the Brisbane Powerhouse site.
With her weekly markets, Jan has educated Brisbanites about the provenance of their food and has single-handedly changed the purchase behaviours of Brisbane residents. Now there is a Jan Powers Farmers Markets every single Saturday somewhere in Brisbane, plus a weekly City Market in Reddacliff Place – a haven for city workers and residents.
Today Jan Powers Farmers Markets is managed by Jan's daughter Sammy Power, a business woman and creative who is continuing her mother's vision of connecting the public to the farmers.
"Markets were the heart and soul of cities of old," said Sammy. "They were where families connected, where the city met and mingled, argued and loved; and the farmers markets are the modem day incarnation of this, therefore, they are at the heart and soul of Brisbane."
Sammy continues to work with local government and planning authorities, as well as farmers, producers and city leaders to ensure the future of Farmers Markets throughout Brisbane.
With a feel good, grass roots experience with a real sense of community on offer, Jan Powers Farmers Market is Brisbane's go-to for fresh farm produce, flowers, breads, artisan products, meat, fish, poultry, plants and organics.
Come along to a market event this weekend. Entry is FREE - upcoming dates and locations are noted here.
