Located right next to Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital, is surprisingly devoid of trees for a space that's right next to the bush, but it does have both picnic and exercise facilities, as well as some unusual activities for kids of all ages to try.

The site is in a very out of the way location, as you'll have to go past the hospital towards roads that are mainly No Through Roads to find it. However, because of its proximity to the hospital, the parking near it is difficult, even if a lot of those visitors aren't here for the park.

Should you make the effort to go there though, you'll find that while looks pretty small and simple, there's actually a lot there. There's a soccer field, which is the reason it looks so open and empty, and at one end it's got toilets, cricket nets, a basketball half-court and exercise equipment.



Over the other side of the park there's a picnic area and some more unexpected features, like a ping pong table, which I've never seen at a local park before. There were even paddles resting on the table when I was there, though no ball. It not only provides something to do, but it's also covered in information about Councillor P A James, who the park was named after. He was influential in getting the hospital built.





There's also the Science Park, with one activity in particular I noticed from afar; two dishes that look like satellite dishes but are much smaller and are pointed towards each other. If you speak into one, you can hear over at the other. These reflect sound between them. There's also mirrors, with holes at various heights. The idea of these is to reflect your own body in them and get a friend or family member to supply the head, creating an interesting visual effect. The typical playground equipment is limited to a set of swings.
