It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a... grilled cheese sandwich?

Melbourne's first float-down eatery, Jafflechute, is the brain-child of founders Adam Grant and David McDonald with the help of Huw Parkinson and "lots of friends". What is a jafflechute? A jafflechute is a jaffle ("toastie"/panini/grilled cheese sandwich) attached to a parachute. Pay on PayPal, select a time and location from the options given (varies), stand on the 'X' marked outside your chosen location at your chosen time, and await your jaffle to fall from the heavens. Seriously.

In an epic crowdsourcing project , Jafflechutes set off to chute the breeze in North America. They visited Montreal, New York City, and will head wherever the wind (and cash flow) blows them next. In a matter of speaking, wind is their only concern. A wayward breeze and an ill-placed tree or ledge or police car are all that are holding Jafflechutes back from ultimate success; they can't drop your precious cargo from too high, nor too low of course, or failure is imminent.

If you think substance is compromised in favour of style, you'd be mistaken. This "gravity-controlled melted cheese sandwich delivery mechanism" has made toasties ranging from good ol' ham and cheese ($6 AUD) to cheese, roast beef, dill pickles, mushroom and mustard ($7 AUD), with vegan and gluten-free varieties available if you ask nicely.

Jafflechuting in Brooklyn began with a ground-roots campaign using Craigslist, Facebook , Twitter , and other social media outlets, seeking the perfect apartments and offices from which to launch. The tour included stops in Montreal, Canada, where the menu offerings included a combination of Canadian favourites: a poutine jaffle (french fried chips with gravy and cheese between two thick slices of pressed, toasted bread) and a maple syrup variety.

Melbourne's favourite "floateria" will be opening again soon, as Spring springs and the weather becomes more predictable, if that's at all possible in Melbourne.

Need to try a jaffle at Melbourne's first, only, and best pop-up float-down toasted sandwich delivery service? Keep your eyes on their Facebook page for announcements of their next launch dates, and book your most up-lifting sandwich delivery. I am, with bated breath, awaiting a reply to my inquiries on their next drop; I'll update this article as soon as I hear.
