Make the Most of Spring in Sydney and Discover the Magic of the Jacaranda
This season in Sydney is synonymous not only with spring racing fever but also with Jacaranda trees in full blossom; a short-lived splendour and explosion of colour, equivalent to the cherry blossom across Japan and the anemones covering the forest floors in my native Denmark. To celebrate the flowering Jacaranda, I therefore dedicated the first weekend of November to an Australian rendition of the Japanese hanami and went on a quest to find the most glorious jacarandas in the Eastern Suburbs. Famous viewing spots include the Rocks, Circular Quay and the Botanical Gardens in the CBD, but for a true local experience I would recommend an afternoon stroll around my own neighbourhood of Paddington.

From Edgecliff station walk along Ocean Street to the corner of Jersey Road where a magnificent Jacaranda transforms the pavement beneath into a carpet of ultraviolet-purple leaves. From there follow Jersey Road, pass by the old English pub, Lord Dudley, and turn into Hargrave Street where delicate Jacarandas line the street in front of the quaint terrace houses. Keep strolling along Gurner Street through to Five Ways junction, the heart of Paddington, where café goers and coffee lovers can enjoy purple pops of colour. Make a little side trip up and down Goodhope Street before you continue along Glenmore Road till you finally hit Oxford Street where a magnificent plethora of Jacarandas form a canopy of sheer delight.

Jacaranda trees are in full blossom in late October and early November so make sure to venture out for your Jacaranda viewing sooner rather than later.
