The desire to draw is hard-wired within us. It's a fundamental urge that can be witnessed in many different arenas - from the toddler who picks up crayons to scribble on the wall, to the silver-haired businessman who doodles while suffering through sales calls.

Some of us are better at drawing than others, of course. It's the works of the former group which will feature in an exhibition, opening on 15 March with a floor talk and morning tea, at the Caboolture Regional Art Gallery .

The 2012 (JADA) is a Grafton Regional Gallery touring exhibition, presented every two years. It features 50 drawings by as many artists. This is the cream of the crop, particularly when you consider that more than 418 entries for the JADA were received from every state and territory in Australia - the third highest number since the award was established in 1988.

On show will be new and traditional mediums and techniques, as well as a variety of surfaces, and a blurring of boundaries between drawing and other forms of art practice, such as painting, printing and sculpture. Organiser and Grafton Regional Gallery Director Jude McBean believes there is a complexity to contemporary drawing in Australia: 'The drawings reference national and international issues yet the artists continue to use the primary human activity of drawing to express this current transformation of culture locally and internationally, a transformation driven by technology.'

The good news is that there are more than a few opportunities to get hands-on too. For example, there will be a JADA Family Fun day at the Caboolture Regional Art Gallery on Saturday 12 April from 10am to 2pm - with free entry and no bookings required.

Activities on the day will include a range of challenges, such as finding the bugs in Christie Patrick's 27 Bugs and preparing a family feast inspired by Rebecca Bladen's sumptuous table depicted in Untitled 2012. Gallery visitors will also have the opportunity to dance to the motion of Christopher Orchard's Thrown (Swirl 2), 2012.

JADA is on display at the Caboolture Regional Art Gallery until 4pm on Thursday 17 April 2014 and is complemented by the Travelling without a Camera exhibition by distinguished Brisbane artist Mostyn Bramley-Moore.
