Laugh Cheer Move
In June I went to see the brilliant Jabbawockeez dance crew at Jupiter's Hotel and Casino, in their brand new theatre space in Broadbeach. The show was due to end recently but due to popular demand they have extended their run until 1 November 2012.
I am a fan of street dance (of the watching variety only) and have always been massively impressed by the routines that these crews can create and execute so flawlessly. I can only dream of such talent, so when I saw that they were playing locally at Jupiter's, I jumped at the chance to see some street dancing action up close.
Still on a budget, I looked into what offers were available (if you don't ask you don't get right) and I managed to find a great one off May deal that the hotel was running for two show tickets plus a basic twin room stay in the hotel for one night with buffet breakfast, all for just $199, so just a hundred bucks each for me and a mate. Amazing. The package they have now is for a superior room, 2 show tickets and buffet breakfast and it is a total of $269 – still a really great deal.
Show only tickets are $69, but Jupiter's has loads of offers such as dinner and show packages from well just $69 also, so it really is a "no brainer" not to make use of the dinner packages they have available. They have about 6 restaurants within the Jupiter's resort so you can pick and choose what suits both taste and budget. We ate at Vivo the Italian Restaurant and the food and service was just stunning so I highly recommend there if you can but there are plenty to chose from. As these deals are so popular, they get booked up quickly so make sure you book your table well in advance so you get the time and the restaurant that you want.
I say resort because Jupiter's Hotel & Casino is just that, it probably has more under one roof than most small towns and you could totally stay there for a couple of weeks and do something different every night without leaving the building. Obviously I wouldn't recommend that, but I think you get my point, its big and has loads to do including 4 bars, a theatre, casino, 6 restaurants, hotel, pool, conferencing, events, live music and more.
The show was very good, there were some small parts I wasn't so keen on but that is simply down to personal taste. I think it's a pretty big achievement to take what is essentially a 4-5 minute routine and turn it into a 90-minute extravaganza, which caters for every kind of audience and has a sprinkling of everything including comedy, theatre, drama, a variety of dance, audience participation, movement, costumes, production, sets and a soundtrack that will appeal to every age and music taste.
Jabbawockeez describe the show as "the audio-visual story of inspiration bought to life by the harmonisation of sound and movement".
When they do what they do best, a group routine, it truly is breathtaking and totally worth seeing – the show is great for kids and adults alike and ideal as an intro into street dance and freestyle movement and theatre. It is pretty cool to see them up close and personal with their trade mark expressionless white masks and gloves - removing the facial expressions really makes you appreciate them as a collective and focuses your attention on what they are doing. Plus it makes it even more impressive how well they can express emotion and story through simple movement and dance.
It is something a little different that is child friendly and inoffensive that all the family can enjoy. Plus if you can get either the dinner or hotel package the spectacle of dining or staying in the Jupiter's resort will make it a really special occasion.
Children four and under get in free, plus during this extended run all kids tickets are half price.
The tagline for this show is Laugh. Cheer. Move and I can happily say I absolutely did all three.
