Family friendly dining on the Mooloolaba Esplanade
De Ja Vu cafe is located on a long stretch of restaurants and cafes along the Mooloolaba Esplanade, on the scenic Sunshine Coast. If you enjoy going out for breakfast on the weekend, or on holidays, then you are spoilt for choice with a host of cafes along the strip with a range of breakfast specials and friendly staff at each door, waiting to invite you in. With so many choices, how do you know which one to choose?
On a recent holiday to the Sunshine Coast, our family were wondering that very question - they all looked good! As we walked along, however, we saw that one, that seemed to be bustling with happy locals and tourists. On the first morning of our holiday, we found a table in the sun at De Ja Vu and perused the menu. We didn't want to spend too much time looking at the menu, however, as the view over to the beachfront kept dragging our attention away...
If you are dining for breakfast they have a Specials Board outside the cafe, which changes every day. On our first visit (yes, we went back again!), we chose the Dukka Special - Bacon, smashed avocado, poached egg, chilli jam, dukkah spice and sourdough toast, for $18.90. Although it was shaping up to be a beautiful winter's day on the coast, it was still a little fresh, so I ordered the Porridge with coconut yoghurt, fresh banana and berries and toasted coconut ($17.50) from the regular menu. Our daughter was more than excited to have the House made pancake with maple syrup and ice-cream for $12 off the Kids Brekky Menu.
When they arrived, our eyes feasted on the colours as they seemed to burst in the bright sunshine - why does everything look so much better on holidays? They also tasted as good as they looked, particularly the Dukkah Special with its subtle blend of flavours and a hit of the best chilli jam we had ever tasted. My healthy porridge also hit the spot and the pancakes and ice-cream were demolished without a sound. It was the perfect start to our Mooloolaba holiday.

We enjoyed our experience so much on our first morning, that on our last morning of our holiday we thought we would end it how we started - at a sun-soaked table at our new favourite cafe (yes, it was a little like de ja vu!). On this occasion we chose the Breakfast Specials of Bacon and eggs with coffee ($14.90), Bacon and egg wrap with hash brown and BBQ sauce with coffee ($15.90) and the Ham and cheese open grill soldiers with hash brown ($12) off the Kids Brekky Menu.
While we were waiting we got chatting to the owner, who was adjusting the plastic roll-down blinds around the outside of the seating area. We mentioned that she had the best office on the coast and she agreed, and also said she had the best customers as well. She said that they have had the business for the last 7 years and it opens at 4:45am every morning for the regulars who go for their morning swim and then come over for a coffee. We commented that we had been there before at the start of our holiday and came back as we enjoyed it so much - particularly their chilli jam - and she said that they make everything on site. Every sauce, jam, soup and what you see on the plate, has been made by them.
This is what makes it such a popular cafe on the strip - just the simple combination of personal customer service and great-tasting food.... and excellent coffee doesn't hurt!
Start the day with the morning paper and coffee...
Although we enjoyed our holiday breakfast experiences at De Ja Vu, it is easy to see how the locals and regulars keep going back to enjoy the friendly hospitality and good food on offer - every day. It is somewhere that you could easily just stop at each morning after a walk along the beach or a play in the sand with the kids. It is just mere metres to walk across the road and enjoy the beauty of the Sunshine Coast, as the sun comes up over the coastline.
