What better way to relax after a hard day of work, than with Japanese tapas, sake, and beer? This is the place.

An Izakaya is a type of Japanese drinking and dining establishment, popular in Japanese culture as a place go to unwind over drinks and tapas after a hard day of work. Food quality, friendly service, and price make Izakaya Hachibeh, 143-145 Bourke Street, a must-stop destination for those looking for affordable Japanese in a relaxed casual atmosphere, in the heart of the city.

Hachibeh offers a lively and friendly dining experience with its variety of authentic Japanese tapas. A list of small cooked and raw dishes to accompany drinks after work, ranges from Okonomiyaki (japanese pancake),Yakitori (chicken skewers), Gyutan shioyaki (thinly sliced beef tongue grilled with salt and pepper), and tempura, to a variety of sashimi, sushi and salads. Or for main serves choose from a variety of noodles in soup, rice dishes, hot pot, sushi/sashimi or vegetarian options.

We started with tempura, combination of prawns and vegetables, which made for a great accompaniment to our chilled sake apertif. For mains, my dining companion had the teriyaki chicken, and I could not pass on my usual order of Una don. Both had succulent and flavoursome pieces of meat, and are highly recommended.

Izakaya Hachibeh offers great service, food, atmosphere and dangerously large quantities of sake!
