The famous annual Christmas light displays on The Boulevard are back for 2015, and they do not disappoint. Possibly Melbourne's most notable residential Christmas light display, scores of houses go all-out with creative use of lights, elaborate nativity scenes, inflatable Santas and more.
Bring some cash with you when you check out the Ivanhoe lights. While it is totally free to enjoy the displays, you may want to donate money, with the carollers and the live band collecting for charity. It is also tempting to recharge at the sausage sizzle stand earlier in the evening.
As the annual Ivanhoe displays are so popular, traffic banks up in surrounding streets. I found that getting there before dark made it a stress-free experience. While I had to wait for nightfall to take in the impressiveness of the displays, at least I did not have to negotiate heavy traffic in residential streets. If you do not want to get there early, you will have to park quite far away from The Boulevard. Some visitors opt to drive through The Boulevard to look at the lights, but I would not recommend this unless it is necessary for you as the atmosphere is more enjoyable on foot.
