Can you picture renowned Italian Master, Raphael chowing down on morning scones when inspiration for "Holy Family with Saint John" had temporarily deserted him? What do you imagine Titian used to scoff when he was taking a well-earned refreshment break from painting "Philip II"? Did Corregio crave a special tea blend to keep him going through a long and tedious Renaissance afternoon? Well, the National Gallery of Victoria's probably won't answer any of these questions, but it will provide you with your own delicious before or after exhibition interlude while you contemplate these mysteries.

The latest in a long line of distinguished and highly popular Melbourne Winter Masterpieces, Italian Masterpieces from Spain's Royal Court, Museo del Prado opens on Friday, 16th May and will be warming the hearts of art loving Melbournians until Sunday 31st August.

More than 70 paintings and 30 drawings from some of the most famous and influential painters to ever pick up a horse-hair or badger-hair paintbrush will be on display, some of them for the first time ever outside Spain.

When you've had your fill of the scale, power and mastery of these awe-inspiring images you may want refreshments worthy of the artistic experience.

Located on Level 1 of NGV International, Tea Room will be offering an Italian Masters-inspired high tea with scones, dessert, and savouries all handmade by their team of pastry chefs, along with tea or coffee and a glass of Prosecco, an Italian sparkling white wine made from Glera grapes.

From 10am to 3.30pm you might decide to substitute the Prosecco for an Italian-inspired cocktail. Decisions, decisions.

The price is $55 per person or $49.50 for NGV members. This price does not include entry to the exhibition. Book by calling Tea Room on (03) 8620 2431 or by emailing [email protected]. Tea Room is open from 10am to 5pm every day except Tuesdays.

Who knows? Maybe Corregio and friends were fortified by something a little stronger than tea and scones. Times were tough during The Renaissance.
