Great works by Titian, Raphael, Tintoretto and friends
In keeping with Melbourne's reputation as the arts capital of Australia, every year Arts Victoria sources prestigious exhibitions from some of the most highly-renowned galleries and institutions in the world for its Melbourne Winter Masterpieces program. From 16th May to 31st August this year the National Gallery of Victoria will present Italian Masterpieces from Spain's Royal Court, Museo del Prado, highlighting the grand and iconic works of some of the most famous and revered painters of history.
Australia has never seen an exhibition of Italian Masters like this one. It represents almost three centuries of works, from the early sixteenth to late eighteenth centuries, a period when Italian artists were the acknowledged masters of the artistic world.
The Museo Nacional del Prado is Spain's most important gallery and museum, and a huge number of its works have come from the Royal Collection, gathered over centuries from the various Reales Sitios (Royal Residences). Many works were directly commissioned by the Spanish nobility, who recognised the quality of the Italian Masters, and who could afford to pay for them. The Prado houses the largest collection of Italian works outside Italy.

The other exhibition that completes this year's Winter Masterpieces program is DreamWorks Animation: The Exhibition at ACMI; obviously not from the sublime to the ridiculous given the quality of animation produced under the Dreamworks banner, but an interesting juxtaposition nonetheless. Your winter will undoubtedly be better with a visit to each.
