The
Lavazza Italian Film Festival is screening around the country throughout October and November. The SA leg of the festival is showing at the
Palace Nova Eastend cinemas from 22nd October to 11th November with a total of
26 contemporary Italian films.
I was lucky enough to be invited to a taste of what's in store for Festival goers by attending the
media launch which included refreshing
Limoncello cocktails and delicious antipasti. This was followed by the preview screening of the movie
Honey (Miele) by celebrated actress
Valeria Golino in her directorial debut. In this multilayered drama, Irene (
Jasmine Trinca) plays an 'angel of mercy' (going by the pseudonym Honey) who works outside the law to assist the terminally ill with a peaceful and dignified death.
Honey is an idealist, and risking arrest, goes about her work with conviction and grace. One gets the impression from her casual relationships that she is afraid of intimacy and commitment. However when retired architect Carlo (
Carlo Cecchi) enlists her services, and she discovers he is merely depressed and tired of life rather than terminally ill, she is forced to reconsider her work in a new light. A tender relationship gradually develops between the two as Honey breaks down the walls that the cold and terse Carlo has constructed around him.
Honey begins questioning her own morals and ethics and those of her business partner as her line of work takes its toll on her lifestyle and relationships. For such a confronting subject matter this movie is surprisingly engaging. The gentle pace of the film never becomes labored; the solid performances and captivating storyline keep the viewer interested for the entire 96 minutes duration. Some of the 'end of life' scenes are heart-wrenching and handled beautifully by both cast and Director.
If this movie is anything to go by for the rest of the Festival, then film aficionados will be in for a treat.
