Did you know that Elizabeth Quay has its own little island? With a cafe and a playground for the kids? And that it's an island connected to the mainland?

Okay, so it's not a real island, but the is a real restaurant serving coffee, cakes, lunches and weekend breakfasts and sits at the heart of this 'island'.

Unfortunately, our visit was ill-planned and we were too early for lunch, and they don't offer weekday breakfasts. I peered into the empty restaurant, wondering where all the customers were. Surely something as trivial as a few clouds on an overcast day could not have dissuaded the people of Perth from visiting!

When I apprehensively told the MaƮtre d' I was after a coffee, he led me through the restaurant and out to a lovely alfresco area, where several tables of diners were enjoying coffee and cakes and thus explaining why the restaurant was empty.

If you're wondering why I didn't wait for lunch, well - waiting around with two small children in tow is not ideal. The baby is okay but the toddler has a penchant for running amok. Before the lunch menu kicks in, they offer a selection of hot drinks and various cakes, including carrot cake, tarts, cheesecakes and slices. The lunch menu features snacks, a selection of pizzas, main meals and salads.

We were seated with enough space for the pram, plus a high chair. They offer table service and I ordered a cappuccino, babyccino for my eldest daughter and a chocolate and walnut brownie with a scoop of ice cream. Delish!

The drinks arrived shortly before the brownie - and thank goodness - the lure of a babyccino never fails to keep the crazy toddler quiet for a few minutes.

The brownies was absolutely delightful - perhaps a tad sweet for my liking, but thoroughly tasty all the same. My daughter polished off all the ice cream and I never stood a chance of having a taste of that.

The outdoor decor is relaxed and casual and overlooks the water, along with providing views of the city. The interior inside is beautifully modern and bright. Of course, Miss Crazy wanted to touch everything and I was afraid we would somehow end up with the contents of the delightful cake display squished on the floor.

There are colouring pencils available for the kids and a children's menu . When the toddler starts climbing on furniture, it's time to go. Luckily there is a playground right next door, so off we went to have a look.

I can recommend Isle ofVoyage for their coffee and cake and vow to plan my next trip so that I arrive for lunch or a weekend breakfast. It was a lovely outing for sweet treat of morning tea and a delicious coffee.
