Island of Lemurs is a fascinating short film about the primate inhabitants endemic to Madagascar. This forty-five minute short film narrated by Morgan Freeman explores the life and habits of some of the lemur species in Madagascar, including the Indri lemurs, ring tail lemurs, tiny mouse lemurs and Sifaka lemurs among others. The movie also follows Dr. Patricia C. Wright's study and lemur conservation project in Madagascar.

The lemurs with their bushy squirrel like tails (sometimes longer than their bodies), large eyes and somewhat cat like faces are intriguing creatures. The short film tracks the history of lemurs back to the age of the dinosaurs. The lemurs survived the asteriods that eradicated the dinousars and floated away to land on the island of Madagascar. They lived and thrived on the island mainly due to its isolation and lack of predators. Today the biodiversity of Madagascar is of global significance and home to wildlife that is not found anywhere else in the world.

The film follows a group of lemurs who like other primates survive in groups. It's a matriarchal society for them where even the smallest female holds ground over the male lemur. The film follows many lemur species, including the larger Indri lemur who wail and call out to each other.

The leaping and charming dancers, the furry Sifaka lemurs.

The ring tail lemurs who keep their tails up to ensure they are in a group and the smallest known species, which is probably 2 ounces when fully grown, the fascinating grey mouse lemur.

The work of Dr. Wright serves a reminder to all about conservation of environment and wildlife. These endangered species are only found in Madagascar and are known not to survive in captivity. The movie is educational, family friendly and has captured some brilliant clips of lemurs in their natural habitat jumping effortlessly from tree to tree and climbing steep cliffs to join their group.

The subject of the movie is perfect for all ages with plenty of facts about the life of lemurs. The little wondrous creatures are remarkable to watch in 3D.

IMAX are offering school sessions from Term 1 2015 till 2016 for Island of Lemurs in 3D. Teachers can choose any of the existing sessions or if they can't find one that suits they can request for a session on weekdays using this link .

The short film is directed by David Douglas and written and produced by Drew Fellman
