34B hosts a monthly variety Burlesque night put on by Pip Branson, always with a different theme, tonight of course being Island Exotica. They showcase some of the best Burlesque talent in Sydney and internationally. It's good to book a table so you have a seat and a clear view of the stage. If you book general admission you will most likely be standing, but because the venue is small, you still have a decent view. The opening act was "Rufino and the Coconuts - Voodoo Pop", Pip Branson and his band combined just the right elements of kitsch, French accents and funny lyrics to make you feel as if you were shipwrecked on a lush tropical island even on a freezing winter night in Sydney.
Next came the lovely host Rita Fontaine, the 2010 winner of the Miss Burlesque Australia. She is a tall sexy redhead with attitude and sass, and made for a hilarious host throughout the night. It's important when seeing a Burlesque act to clap cheer and holler as the lovely ladies take us through their seductive strip tease. Rita made sure we were on target taking the audience to task if we didn't show the proper enthusiasm for the lovely performers.
The acts varied from a lovely Hawaiian Hula performance from Veronica Bloom, to a really impressive hula hoop show from Heidi Hoops. This lady could spin 6 hula hoops without breaking a sweat, it was mind blowing, she is a must see.
Vena Vamp was quite frightening as a Voodoo Princess who put a Voodoo spell on the audience; she definitely dabbles in the dark arts. Sheena Miss Demeanour stole the show with her clever act of a jungle girl who gets lost in the big city. Sheena is a professional ballet dancer so watching her perform is always impressive.
Pickled Tink did a hilarious take on Tom Hanks Cast Away movie. Another stunning act was Danica Lee who seduced the audience as a Mayan princess, and her feathered headdress and rhinestone costume dazzled.
Burlesque is such a beautiful art form to watch. You get to see such creativity from the artists who work incredibly hard to put together their costumes, the theme and choreograph the music. If you've never been to a Burlesque show I highly suggest coming to 34B, the performers are top notch and the vibe is friendly and casual. All in all it was a successful night shipwrecked on Island Exotica.
