Located in Thornbury the (IMA) is the newest and most impressive museums in Melbourne with something for everyone. Whether you wish to browse the many levels of the museum, or conduct research or participate in a workshop, or a 3D Virtual Reality experience, the has something for everyone.



Muslims and non-Muslims are equally welcome, and the venue is fully accessible with ramps, lifts, family and prayer rooms on each floor. There is also a theatrette, meetings rooms, an outside courtyard and the IMA café serving food with a Middle Eastern twist. You can even hold your next function, meeting or workshop at the museum and book a group tour.



Learn how Muslims contributed to building The Ghan railway in Darwin, their relationship with Aboriginal people and how their cameleer expertise was helpful in building Northern Australia. Find out how Muslims in Australia have contributed to our society in sport, politics, journalism, AFL, sociology and education.



Explore traditional and contemporary art and architecture from Mecca to Marree. From studying the night sky to honing expertise in engineering, mathematics and medicine, is attributed to the intellectualism and creativity of Islamic culture in the Golden Age.



Learn about the poet Rumi, and Persian folktales '1001 Arabian Nights', 'Sinbad the Sailor' and 'Queen Scheherazade', the Astrolab, music and astronomy, as you tour the museum. Explore the great mosques in Oman, Syria, Spain, Abu Dhabi, Turkey, Iran, Morocco and India and have a '3D virtual reality' experience of what it is like to walk in the desert and be inside an Islamic palace or house.



How to get there
Located in Thornbury it is best to drive or take an Uber to the museum. However, if the weather is good, you can easily take Tram No. 6 towards Moreland from Federation Square along Swanston Street to Stop 129-Moreland Rd/Holmes St (Brunswick) and walk about 12 minutes to the museum (total travel time about 42 minutes according to Public Transport Victoria).



By train and bus

From Flinders Street Railway Station you can also take a train to Moreland Station (Coburg) and take the bus towards Ivanhoe Route 510, and alight at Merri Business Park/Normanby Ave (Thornbury) and walk about five minutes to the museum (total travel time about 40 minutes)

Remember it's always best to check www.ptv.vic.gov.au before you go anywhere, and allow time for traffic, weather and construction work.



Opening hours and cost

The is open Tuesday - Saturday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, and costs $12.00 for Adults, $10.00 for Students and concession card holders, $8.00 for primary school children and free for children under 5 years of age. Workshops and tours are reasonably priced for groups, schools and businesses.
