Sew together while we stay apart
Learn a new skill and start a fun new project with other souls while staying safe at home by signing up for Isewlation's free online sewing classes.

Organised by Glen Eira City Council - Arts and Culture, Soul Stitches Sewing Classes, and Glen Eira City Council, the sessions will be held live on Facebook at 3pm over four Saturdays in August. The instructional videos will also be able to be watched later on.

Aimed at both teens and adults, the classes will be hosted by Jennifer of Soul Stitches, who will "guide you through the construction of an awesome collection of practical and beautiful homely items". The classes will include tips and advice on the best construction and recycling techniques.

The four free sewing classes cover:

For this one, you'll need main fabric 50cm x 30cm denim, drill or canvas weight fabric (fabric with a bit of body to it), lining fabric 50cm x 30cm lighter weight cotton, and matching thread.

Fabric: Main fabric 100cm x 50cm denim, drill, canvas, linens and upholstery fabrics, dress Zip 51cm this will be visible so choose a colour to match or feature and matching thread

You will need a sewing machine of your own or to borrow one from a family member, friend or neighbour. It is possible to sew the items by hand, but this will take a lot longer.

Other tools/materials you will also need all of Isewlation's sessions are:

  • fabric scissors or a cutting mat and rotary cutter and fabric weights

  • pins and a sharp pencil

  • dressmakers chalk or a pencil if you don't have chalk

  • ruler or tape measure that is at least 45 cm in length

  • paper scissors

  • iron, ironing board, and pressing ham or rolled up towel

  • assorted fabric (the specific fabric needed for each session is specified) - this can be upcycled fabric like old tea towels, old clothing you no longer wear or pillowcases

  • zipper foot attachment if zips are being used

Your sewing machine will need to be ready to go before the session, so make sure it is threaded and tested before a session. Your fabric also needs to be cut to size and ready for use.

Glen Eira City Council - Arts and Culture promotes arts and culture events within the City of Glen Eira municipality, as well as broader opportunities that may be of interest to local artists.

Soul Stitches aims to foster, enhance and develop people's love of creative sewing and textiles. It organises sewing classes (usually in person) for children, VCE students and adults from beginners wanting to learn the basics of sewing through to advanced sewers wanting to refine or enhance their skills.

The event organisers ask that all participants read the terms and conditions on the Facebook event page prior to participating in these online art sessions.
