A lot of people are filled with dread at the prospect of public speaking. They will go to any lengths to avoid it, often to the detriment of other areas of their life.

So what's the scariest scenario? Giving a speech in front of strangers. What's a slightly less scary scenario? Giving a speech to family, friends or people you know. Well maybe not, it might be easier if you didn't know them at first. Even less threatening? Working together with like-minded people, who will support you and offer strategies to improve your public speaking skills.

Toastmasters is an organisation that is focused on communication and leadership, but there are so many more benefits. You will learn ad hoc speaking, how to run a business session, lead a team, organise events, and learn how to speak with different purposes (to inspire, to inform, or to entertain). You will feel more comfortable speaking "off the cuff" and rebutting arguments, as well as speaking in "organic" situations – where you may not have prepared a set speech.

Some people have joined Toastmasters to improve their confidence, others have joined so they could be comfortable speaking to people older than them, so they can learn how to give a presentation for work, because they need social interaction, or because they want to help others develop these skills.

One of Ironbark's organisers, Annette, is one of those who are now enjoying giving back to new Toastmasters members. Originally becoming involved with Toastmasters to develop her professional speaking skills for confidence, she sees the progress she has made over the last 3 years, and wants others to get as much out of it as she has and does.

Ironbark Toastmasters Club is starting up on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of every month at the Mitchelton Library. People attend Toastmasters for various reasons but the most common is simply that they want to overcome the very real fear of speaking in public. It's also about learning to communicate effectively and developing leadership skills. There is a free demonstration meeting held on the 8th of March to give the local community a taste of what Toastmasters has to offer.

There is no need to register your interest beforehand, but you are able to contact the organisers through the Facebook pag e or email address if you have any questions.

**There is absolutely no preparation required, or an obligation for anyone to be involved in the meeting. There will be people from different levels of confidence and public speaking ability attending, so some may like to be active more than others.
**

Ironbark will start meeting the 2nd and 4th Wednesday nights of each month at 6:45pm-8:30pm from the 8th of March; this event is an open invitation to anyone who would like to come along and see what Toastmasters is all about and how it can help them.

A light supper with tea and coffee will be provided.
