Ipswich Heritage Events 2024

From Discover Ipswich - Ipswich, Queensland's official online tourist information, are many events for the month of April. I have listed some select events utilising a 'heritage theme' - because Ipswich is the heritage city of Queensland. I have also added the link on Discover Ipswich at its what's on section to help sift through the many events advertised for April. Also recommended on the Discover Ipswich pages is 'the things to do' list - with 88 (22 rows of four) different things to do in Ipswich and surrounds. Interestingly, two such events are in mid-April with the rail museum event on now till April 14. However, the main event in terms of Ipswich's heritage is on much later in the year during early September and late August - which is a city-wide celebration of heritage.

Why heritage?

Ipswich is steeped in history and thus in Queensland is the heritage city. While like most Australian cities, some parts look very modern and brand new, there are several unique things about Ipswich which make it a heritage city and Queensland's outstanding city in terms of heritage. These include pioneering, geographically close to Brisbane, railway history, mining history and agricultural history - hence many old buildings are well preserved in Ipswich from that history, hence the heritage concept is abundant in Ipswich and more than in other Queensland cities.

An impressive way to reveal this as fact rather than myth or fiction is to search the Queensland government's heritage register. Found online at https://apps.des.qld.gov.au/heritage-register , one can search for place names. There are at the time of publication, 1796 total searchable entries on the online register. The pages are a sound introduction to heritage for those interested in learning more about the concept.

Upon searching using a basic search - not an advanced search, Ipswich had more mentions as a search term than famous historical cities like Maryborough, Bundaberg and even the large Toowoomba (which all yielded substantial results of over 100 results per search). To put things in perspective, a search for 'Gayndah' (Queensland's oldest surviving town) and the 'Gold Coast' had Gayndah just two search results at 37 results short of the Gold Coast's 39 results. Hence with startling results like the aforementioned, I can clearly see Ipswich is quite strong performing in terms of the heritage register itself. Incidentally, a search for 'Brisbane' was most of the register, so 1424/1796 possible results.

Note that Ipswich is accessible from Brisbane via several motorways which all connect to the Ipswich Motorway. From Toowoomba, the Warrego Highway connects to Ipswich, while from southern states and towns, the Cunningham Highway connects Ipswich. The picture with this review was sourced from the Wikipedia article for Ipswich , which is the main street of Brisbane Street, dated to 1904.
