Rovers is a fast-paced and nostalgic bittersweet two-woman show, starring
Roxanne McDonald and
Barbara Lowing . This original and uniquely Australian show premiered in 2018 at Lismore and was set for a national tour in the following year. Due to the ramifications of the global pandemic the, Rovers' tour is via cyberspace. The production (filmed at Redlands Performing Arts Centre) is available to view multiple times via a YouTube link once the e-ticket is purchased
Roxanne and Barbara are veterans of stage and screen, who have a great camaraderie and amazing stories to tell. They jump about the stage with abandon as they introduce the audience to such characters as
Jessie Hickman ,
Barbara Toy and
Black Mary , as well as telling stories from their lives. The storylines of these sting Australian trailblazers are interwoven and the
Rovers don't let the truth get in the way of a good story. It may not all be fact but it is definitely fun. They do not take themselves too seriously even though the subject matter can be quite tough at times. The few props and music are used to great effect. There is some double entendre and coarse humour, so it is not suitable for young children.
Watching
Rovers was an enjoyable and interesting way to spend an hour of lockdown and the subject matter piqued my interest to find out more about these fascinating women. For instance, the intrepid Barbara Toy, who travelled the world solo in the 1950s and 60s, was the namesake and great aunt of Barbara Lowing.
Purchase a household ticket for $18 to support the arts and have a theatre experience in your lounge room during lockdown.
