Mama of two. Finding fun, new and thrifty ways to entertain my little girls.

Seashells are more than by the seashore when you step inside the shell museum at Inverloch.

Housed at the seaside town's Bunurong Environment Centre, the shell museum is one room filled with more than 6,000 sea specimens and boasting one of the world's best displays of sea shells.

The museum's current collection (owned by the Bass Coast Shire) was created from various private collections and is constantly reviewed and updated.

And while the majority can be viewed inside glass cabinets (labelled with their scientific name), there are many on display that can be handled too, making the museum a perfect stop-off for adults and children.

For little beach lovers, the collection certainly won't disappoint. Our two wannabe mermaid princesses loved all the new shell discoveries they saw. But, of course, the standout was holding the various shells on the touch-table and raising each to their ears to "hear" the ocean calling.

The museum is in the heart of Inverloch town and a short stroll to the beach and an adventure playground. It's open from 10am-4pm Friday-Monday, daily during school holidays and on public holidays. A small admission fee applies (we paid $5 for a family).
