Whilst some of us may think the subject of philosophy is a bit dry and hard going, it doesn't have to be like this. Joanne Brennen will be delivering a fun and light-hearted talk on the subject at Bright Learning's head quarters and if you're even the tiniest bit curious about this topic, her talk is a must-do for you! No prior knowledge is assumed or necessary. Jo says, "This talk is designed for complete beginners - just bring your curiosity and a sense of fun! It will focus on a few key interesting ideas and serve as a "taster" for philosophically thinking. If nothing else - I'll give you a few impressive phrases you can whip out at dinner parties to impress (for example, by the end of the night you'll understand 'cogito ergo sum'). What this session won't be is technical, dry or jargonistic."

So what is philosophy? Jo explains that it is about trying to gain knowledge - through reason - by asking some weird and wonderful questions. During her talk, she'll be putting these questions "out there" for some careful and thought-provoking consideration:
How can I be sure the sun will rise again tomorrow morning and when I step out of bed the floor will hold me?
How do I know my sensory experiences are not an illusion, and I'm not just dreaming?
Do humans really have any free will?

These questions may not appear to have any use in the real world, but Jo says that shouldn't prevent us from exploring them and stretching our brains. Are you up for the challenge? Because that's what philosophy is - it dares us to challenge common-sense notions about what we believe.

As your instructor for this talk, Jo is amply qualified to lead you through this fun and quirky session - you'll find information about her qualifications on the Bright Learning website.

Come along and challenge your thinking as you go through a seemingly mundane day in the life of a young woman...... All is not necessarily as it seems - or is it?!

Bookings are required for this event, so reserve your place now and avoid the reality of disappointment!
