Introduction to Latin Dancing - 50% Discount

Now in air-conditioned comfort in Annerley, just minutes from the CBD.

Dancing is fun, social, healthy, and yes, joyful. Right now you may be thinking I am delusional if I am going to convince you that you can dance. You're about to stop reading, but give me a chance here. The thing is, I've seen it for myself. I've been there myself.

I've seen people of all walks of life tentatively step through the doors at James Quinn-Hawtin Dance Academy (JQHDA) having never danced before. I've seen them catch on quickly, get in the Latin groove and soon, those once proclaiming "I Can't Dance" have caught the Salsa bug. Friends and family are amazed. They return week after week for their fix. They start downloading Salsa music. They can be heard tapping their fingers in sets of three. They may even invest in some actual real dance shoes. My most recent pair just arrived in the mail. Yes, if you haven't guessed I am well and truly Salsa-fied, and can barely remember uttering those three words of defeat before my first lesson. And it wasn't that long ago.

JQHDA's incredibly successful Intro to Latin Dancing course has given hundreds of Brisbane's 'Can't Dancers' the confidence to shake their stuff, regardless of who is watching. The 4-week introductory courses have created demand for additional classes, allowing students to continue to build on their skills.

"We found our Intro students were enjoying the classes so much, they were coming back and doing them again. Before long our classes grew to include secondary levels, and the demand continues to grow," founder James Quinn-Hawtin says. "I'm confident we'll have students stay with us for months or even years. We may even end up with a few champion performers in our ranks, but really, our focus is on social dancing."

"We want people to walk out of their JQHDA class smiling, then head out to somewhere like Casablanca's feeling excited to try out their new moves on the dance floor. That result, for us, is way better than any trophy. We make people happy through dance. It's a huge buzz."

James himself has been dancing, performing and instructing for many years in Australia and abroad. He is currently Australia's only Black Belt Dance(tm) Instructor and has choreographed for So You Think You Can Dance Vietnam. It's safe to say he's a well-known name in the Latin dance scene, but to his students and team he's just James. He is supported by instructors Jimmy Hong and Kelsy Luengen, along with a group of apprentices, assistants and helpers who all contribute to students' learning and enjoyment. James and his team have built a reputation for JQHDA in a short time, backed up by glowing testimonials from students who admit they didn't think they would ever feel able to dance.

JQHDA is committed to making Latin dance accessible to everyone by providing clear, patient instruction in a fun and social setting. "One thing people seem to enjoy is our 'all-in' attitude. Dance skill is important to us, but when it comes down to it, it's supposed to be fun. There is no judgment, no competition. Everyone's there to learn and enjoy the experience. If you can't have a laugh, what's the point?" James says.

Latin dance styles like Salsa and Brazilian Zouk-Lambada have been growing in popularity within Brisbane's social scene for some time now. If you visit one of Brisbane's regular Latin dance nights or parties, you may be surprised by the amount and variety of people kicking up their heels 'til the wee hours. Amongst the revellers, you're bound to find more than a few JQHDA students in the crowd. You could be one of them.

Whether you're single or come along with a partner, you're guaranteed to have a great time and learn something new. The biggest step you will take is the step through the doors on your first day. After that, your every step will be peppered with a dash of Latin spice. You're on your way to confidence on the dance floor, and you'll soon be ordering those new shoes. And no, you don't actually need the shoes, you just need to take that first step - the rest is easy. You can dance, come see for yourself.
