There are at least 9 good reasons for keeping chickens in your backyard.
1) They provide you with range eggs with lovely healthy yellow yolks, full of Omega-3 fatty acids and Vitamin E. Nothing beats the golden-yolked eggs of happy, healthy hens.
2) Chickens have endearing personalities. And unlike other pets, they don't need to be walked or groomed.
3) Chickens eat pests in your gardens such as grubs that would otherwise chew through your plants. So they offer a natural form of pest control.
4) Because chickens love to eat grass there is less mowing.
5) Chickens will eat your kitchen scraps, eg. pasta, veggie peel, scrambled egg, mashed potato. They will also eat the excess vegetables from your garden.
6) Eggshells make good compost.
7) You are reducing the demand for store-bought eggs, which we know are not often ethically produced.
8) They provide you with manure for your food garden.
9) Like baby 'tractors' they are great at preparing your veggie patch for planting.
If you would like to learn more about keeping chickens in your backyard My Smart Garden offers a free online workshop. It will teach you how to care for chickens using organic, sustainable, low-cost and low-maintenance methods. While the workshop is free and online, it is only for people living in Melbourne and bookings are essential.
Further advice on how to participate is emailed a few days before the workshop.
My Smart Garden is a free program to help urban residents grow food, shelter your home from the sun and wind, create homes for local wildlife, use water wisely and recycle wastes. The sustainable gardening program is managed by three local councils in inner west Melbourne – Moonee Valley, Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong. While aimed at local residents others are welcome to attend events, space permitting.
They also keep a beginners
guide to keeping chooks here , which is a useful reference.
