Ever wondered how a book can be a work of art? Well now you can learn how to make one in this exciting new one-off workshop.

Artists books are individually made creations, which take the form of a traditional book. They may contain text and/or images and they come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and design. You don't have to be a writer to create an artists book.

From scrolls and fold-outs to concertinas or loose items contained in a box, artists books are only limited by your imagination.

While some argue artists books began life in the medieval period it wasn't really until the 1800s, and indeed the early 1900s that they gained popularity. In the 1970s they were finally recognised as a distinct artist genre.

In this workshop, which costs just $20, you will make an accordion book, and a book with stitched Japanese binding. These creations will be constructed using blank pages, which can then be filled in at your leisure - maybe this is the nudge you'll need to write that masterpiece or fill it with beautiful sketches.

Or just keep it as a work of art in its own right.

But you don't have to be particularly artistic to make an artist books. Just bring along your sense of humour and be willing to give it a go - you might surprise yourself with your creation!

The workshop takes place 1 to 4pm, on Saturday, 5 September at the Coromandel Community Centre and is part of the City of Onkaparinga's South Australian Readers & Writers Festival and will be held during Literacy Week. Booking is essential.

It is facilitated by the very experienced printmaker and book artist, Mary Pulford .
