Old-fashioned childhood adventures

Horizon Festival is a ten-day arts-fuelled Festival where visitors get to experience the creative soul of the Sunshine Coast. Through an award-winning celebration of arts and culture, the premier multi-arts Horizon Festival brings artists, industries, communities and audiences together.

Wildlings Forest School is the creative inspiration giving children the freedom to be outdoors - to play in the mud, to climb trees, to whittle with pocket knives, to build rafts and to fall in love with nature! Being outdoors enables children to reap the social, emotional and physical benefits of being in nature. In Wildlings Forest School's words 'Because children will never learn to love nature if they don't have a childhood in it.'

As part of Horizon Festival, Wildlings Forest School will be hosting some fabulously fun activities and workshops, all aimed at creating memories and outdoor skills that will last a lifetime.

Join Wildlings Forest School at Festival Centre, Maroochydore City Centre, to create your very own nature wand, dream catcher or fishing rod. Into the Wild: Urban Wildlings is a FREE nature craft workshop where children will learn about plants and weeds to be found in most backyards. Into the Wild: Urban Wildlings is all about children creating magical nature crowns and dream catchers using Cats Claw; inventing fishing rods from Chinese Celtis and utilising Camphor Laurel for special magic wands. By becoming aware of plants in local nature spaces, children will naturally become more likely to look after and protect these places for the future.

Sink or float? That is the million-dollar question! An ideal activity for Fathers Day - a Raft Building Workshop and picnic with your Dad, your Grandad or anybody in the family who fancies learning to be a raft builder. Wildlings Forest School is welcoming guests to construct a life-sized raft to float down the idyllic Petrie Creek to be followed by a family Father's Day picnic in an inviting forest space.

Children will have full, supervised use of hand tools, including hand saws, hammers, hand drills etc. plus an array of natural resources, pallets, building and craft materials to erect their very own miniature or life-sized raft to float down Petrie Creek. This is a wet activity, so be prepared to get wet!
