Into Light: French Masterworks from the Musee de la Chartreuse will be on display at Art Gallery of Ballarat from 23 June to 9 September, 2018, showcasing paintings from 19th and 20th century paintings from Douai in Northern France.
France was the acknowledged centre of the art world during the mid-nineteeth century, as realist styles of painting were challenged by Impressionism. As photography was created many artists worked to reproduce nature and found new ways to celebrate light and colour.
The sixty paintings featured in Into Light: French Masterworks from the Musée de la Chartreuse will include romantic seascapes, tranquil landscapes featuring northern France, and works which celebrate lives of ordinary people through the effects of pure light and colour. The French paintings will be shown beside paintings from Australian artists working in France who discovered the same traditions.
Guided tours will be available every Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 12.00pm. French language tours are available by arrangement.
