The Adelaide Botanical Gardens is celebrating International Women's Day with curated tours followed by networking at the National Wine Centre on Tuesday, March 8, 2022.

This International Women's Day offers a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the achievements of some of Adelaide's women working in science. The Adelaide Botanic Gardens will partner with the State Herbarium for a series of fascinating walks through the stunning Botanic Garden, curated by Professor Michelle Waycott, Chief Botanist at the Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium (BGSH) and H.B.S. Womersley Chair in Systematic Botany at the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Adelaide.

The tours begin at the Ginkgo Gate, Adelaide Botanic Garden, accessed off Frome Road - 1:45pm for prompt 2 pm start and there are six tours to choose from. These curated walks will be followed by a networking function from 3 pm - 4.30 pm with guest speakers at the National Wine Centre for those who can join us. Bookings are essential for all tours. Further info available here
**
Tour 1: Science, research and the preserved collections of BGSH
**
Professor Michelle Waycott will describe the breadth of current science and research activities across the Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium (BGSH), and take participants on a short 'discover the vaults' tour inside the State Herbarium of South Australia.
**
Tour 2: Creating new history
**
Dr Leonie Scriven, Deputy Director of Collections at BGSH, will take participants on a walk to uncover the Garden's new Masterplan, including exciting building projects and a proposed renewal of the living plant collections.

%%Tour 3: Cryptic cryptogams, fungi and lichens in our landscape
%%
Join Dr Teresa Lebel, Senior Botanist, Curator of Cryptogams for BGSH, to discover the hidden diversity of these amazing organisms, exploring the ecological importance of soil crusts, fungi and lichens. Learn where to find them, whether they are rotters or helpers, how they can resurrect after dry conditions.

Tour 4: Our cultural and science collections, Santos Museum of Economic Botany and science engagement.

Science, research, education and engagement are all facilitated through good science communication and active, living displays. Visit some of the displays and our exhibits to better understand these linkages on a guided tour with Kirsty Bevan, Manager, Science & Conservation at BGSH.

Tour 5: Conservation of threatened flora – seed orchards and how to grow our threatened plants

Ex situ conservation through seeds and propagation is vital for preservation and restoration of threatened flora. Join Dr Jenny Guerin, Seed Research Officer at BGSH, to learn about some of the research activities undertaken in the South Australian Seed Conservation Centre.

Tour 6: Plant resilience

In this two-part guided tour, you will join Karen Smith, Horticultural Curator at BGSH, to explore the semi-tropical species growing and thriving in the Australian forest, followed by a tour of the tropical collections in Bicentennial Conservatory. Here we will share a real-life case study of plant resilience.
