The historic town of Windsor, nestled by the Blue Mountains, isn't a place one would readily associate with sand. That is set to change for the remainder of January though as the Hawkesbury International Sand Sculpting Championships resides on the banks of the Hawkesbury River.
The winner of the competition will be announced on January 15th, so to see the competitors at work be sure to hurry. If you don't have the time to see the works being crafted, worry not as the sculptures created by the 12 finalists will remain in place as an exhibition until January 29th. The theme of this year's competition is 'Mythical Creatures'. Nothing says 'family-day-out' like a trip to see some of the world's finest sand sculptures.
Visitors will also have the opportunity to vote for their favourite, culminating in a 'People's Choice' award, given to the sculptor who attracts the most votes from the general public.
From January 15th the exhibition will feature sand art, sand sculpting workshops and activities for children including a treasure hunt. There will also be demonstrations of sculptor's creating historic pieces relevant to Hawkesbury.
So unleash your inner child and get along to see the world's finest sand sculptors in action, you might just take some inspiration away with you for that next trip to the beach.
