The sun shining among an array of colourful kites, excited squeals of children as they bounce up and down in jumping castles, music playing from the massive sound system onstage were just some of the sightings at the second International Kite Festival Dubai.



Organized by Tamquest Entertainment, the International Kite Festival Dubai took place on January 18, 2013, from 9 am till 6 pm at Dubai Outlet Mall. The festival is a celebration of the art of kite-making and the skill of using the kite. The event is not only for kite lovers, but also for those who are interested in learning the art of kite-making and how to make it fly, as well as those who are simply looking to have a good time during the weekend and trying out something new. The festival was held at the most appropriate time when the cold winds are passing through the UAE, so not only was the weather pleasant, but the strong winds enabled the kites to soar at the festival.

The festival brought together families of different nationalities and friends with an estimated number of 10,000 visitors, who contributed to the array of colours in the sky that were the kites. Tickets were priced at AED 30 for singles, AED 50 for couples and AED 80 for families, with shopping stalls available throughout the day were selling products from natural salt candle holders to ethnic Indian clothing, a food court serving freshly cooked food throughout the festival, and a kids play area. To add to the liveliness of the festival, DJ Vimal played foot tapping beats throughout the event, and local drum band, Dubai Drums, delivered a one hour long live performance.



Kite lovers had the opportunity to view the exhibited types of kites, as well as witness experts' speeches about kite-making and the materials used in the process. Children got the opportunity to join a kite-building workshop that took place between 9:30 am and 11:00 am. The event was made all the more exciting with stalls that sold kites in varying shapes and sizes from the ordinary diamond shaped kites to birds and parachutes. This way, one did not have to worry about bringing a kite along to the festival. There were gigantic theme based kites that donned the clear blue sky, as shown in the images, that added to the liveliness of the festival.



The second International Kite Festival Dubai was a successful event with only disadvantage being the kite threads that one had to be weary of while walking, before they either make you lose balance or end up cutting off the bearer's kite. Other than that, it was a great opportunity to spend time with the folks over the weekend, and even though our kite flew high only for a few minutes before we realised we had dragged it around enough to make it tear, it was the feeling of elevation at that point of time and watching my own parents turn into children trying to fly a kite that really mattered.
