There is more to January than recovering from NYE and Australia Day, with a range of interesting free (and very cheap) events happening across the month.

January 1
Canning New Year's Day Concert & Fireworks

3.30pm-8.30pm
Shelley Rossmoyne Foreshore Park - Riverton Drive, Shelley

If you didn't get enough fireworks on December 31, head to Shelley for their traditional New Years Day Concert. Gates open at 3.30pm and there will be a licenced bar and more than 10 food trucks, activities for the kids, an afternoon of live music and performances finished by a fireworks display at 8.30pm.

Perth Multicultural Kite Festival

11am-8pm
Curtin University, Kent St, Bentley

With action in the sky as well as on the ground, the Kite Festival is a big day of fun. There will be unbelievable kites to watch. While you cannot BYO kite there will plenty of opportunities to buy within the event, plus a live DJ, rides and games, face painting, food stalls and plenty of entertainment. This is a multicultural and celebratory event and all are welcome.

Fringeworld Festival

Various times and locations across January

Fringe World is one of Perth's biggest and most diverse events starting on January 18th. There are hundreds of events across the city, with plenty of free and family-friendly events including markets, comedy, mermaids, karaoke, demonstrations and so much more.

January 18 (19, 20, 24-28, 31)
Silent Disco

7pm-11pm
Bandstand at the Woodside Pleasure Garde, Russel Square, Northbridge

This is an 18 plus event and part of the exciting Fringe Festival. The silent disco is held nightly across half of January at the Woodside Pleasure Garden. The name of the location should be a hint that this isn't a kiddie event, although under 18s are permitted with a parent or guardian.

Warnbro Swans Sporting Association Community Family Day

Corner of Oakhampton Road and Currie St, Warnbro

A traditional family fun day with plenty of free entertainment, community groups, rides and games, food trucks, craft and market stalls, with fun for everyone.

Cale Street Festival

Cale St, Midland

Celebrate summer in the fabulous new Cale Street precinct, with a range of market and food stalls, plenty of family-friendly activities, live music and more. A celebration of the local community, there will be something for everyone.

Kalamunda Garden Festival

8am-4pm
Kalamunda Town Centre

Celebrate a love of gardening and learn about sustainable gardening with this seasonal gardening festival, which takes place throughout the year. You will learn practical and actionable advice and with over 35 gardening-related stalls, plus displays and demos, and gardening activities for children there is something for every green thumb.

Australia Day Coogee Beach Festival

8am-midday
Coogee Beach Reserve, Powell Rd

Celebrate Australia Day with a morning at the beach. There will be a free sausage sizzle plus rides and games, crafts, performances, water ORB balls, entertainment, mermaids, a petting zoo, watermelon eating competition and sandcastle workshop and competition with the prize being tickets to Rottnest.

Australia Day Festival Cambridge

8.30am-4.30pm
Perry Lakes Reserve, Floreat

Celebrate Australia Day under the gum trees of Perry Lakes with a free breakfast BBQ, plus a Welcome to Country and Citizenship Ceremony. There will be live music and fun activities for the kids including a water slide, face painting, camel rides, sheep shearing and reptiles.

Rockingham Australia Day

Churchill Park, Rockingham

Head to the park for a free family event, with free kids activities, live entertainment and performances, amusement rides, West Oz Wildlife and plenty of food vendors. There will also be a fantastic fireworks display at 8.30pm.

Birak Concert

Supreme Court Gardens, Perth

As part of the Australia Day long weekend, the Birak Concert is a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and communities. There will be a great range of music, dance, art and food, celebrating Birak - the beautiful Nyoongar season which includes the balmy summer months of December and January. All are welcome.

Aussie Play Day

Cathedral Square, Perth city

Celebrate Australia's diverse culture with this inclusive family fun day in beautiful Cathedral Square. There will be craft activities, live music and dance workshops with dancers from New Zealand and India, a community village with themed cubby houses, plus Chinese Orchestra, Aboriginal and Japanese Dance.

One Day in Fremantle
