The story is told from the perspective of Izzy, an adventurous book-loving young girl who moves house with her parents. The house is very old and there's a great big tree in the garden for her to climb.
Izzy thinks of herself as a bit of an investigator and explorer and just loves to accept challenges. She has an inquisitive mind and, as she unpacks her belongings and begins to explore, she notices the small details in and around her new house. She comes across a loose floor board on the doorstep of the family's new but very old home and what she finds sparks her curiosity and takes her on a wild and scary adventure.
Inside the Walls is a story that's full of mystery and intrigue and your kids will love it.
I spoke to a few children after the show and their verdict was unanimous - they loved it! James said that he enjoyed the shadows and the voices. Xavier loved the ghost and the spooky sounds and Rosie said she liked the happy ending.
Inside the Walls is the creation of puppeteer and performing artist Theresa O'Connor. Her giant pop-up book and character puppets come to life as each page is turned. Each item has been created with the minutest detail. The book and story are also projected onto a big screen so that the audience can see the very fine details. The use of lighting, shadows and sound creates quite a spectacular and spooky theatre production.
Theresa O'Connor has a Bachelors degree in Theatre and has performed in Australia and Europe. It was in 2014, while she was researching Children's Literature at the State Library of Victoria under a Fellowship, that she developed her pop up puppet show. The story itself is based on a true life event of hers. She was living at her parent's house in Tasmania and she found a shoe buried under the front door step. The shoe was most likely buried as a good luck charm for the family who lived there. It's a superstition that dates back to old English days and our early Australian settlers obviously brought the tradition with them.
Important information for parents: The recommended age group for this show is 6 and over. There are loud noises, spooky themes and strobe lighting effects.
