Vodka infusions are fun to do, make great gifts, and save you money.

Flavoured commercial vodkas are extremely popular with everything from vodka, citrus, and peach. However, these infusions often come at a hefty price, and have limited flavours. The following is a guide to making them at home, and some ideas for crazy and tasty flavours.

Selecting the Vodka

To begin, grab any vodka left over in the cupboard from your last party at home, or find your nearest great value bottle shop. Vodka that is clean and highly distilled will create a richer infusion, but infusions can also be a way to make a lower quality vodka more enjoyable. A litre of vodka can be used for at least four different infusions. This will give you a chance to taste, share, and explore your favourite infusions.

Range of Ingredients for Infusion

Check the fridge and cupboard for ingredients, or pop down to the local market for some choice ingredients. The strength of the ingredient determines the length of the infusion time.

The quickest infusions.
The quickest infusions are citrus, berries, and lollies, followed by other fruits such as apple and pear. A week is long enough for the flavour to soak through the vodka.

Infusions that are worth the wait
Other ingredients such as chili, mint or cinnamon can take over a week. There is no limit to the range of ingredients for infusions, although some may be more unusual like pineapple, cucumber, and basil.

Recipes that are not for the faint-hearted
Flavours like bacon, coffee, wasabi, ginger, and chocolate can all go horribly wrong if not prepared correctly, and can be too strong. If you are going to mix flavours such as strawberry and pineapple, some flavours will dominate, or not complement each other well.

Bottling the Vodka

Purchase or borrow some canning jars or glass hermetic bottles. These can often be found cheaply at discount stores. Some of the ingredients that go in to the bottle will not come out again, particularly if they expand, so it is best to have additional bottles handy when straining and decanting the infused vodka. If you are making gifts, then it is also best to buy some small decorative sealable bottles for your creation. It's also relatively easy to design and print labels on your computer, or add ribbons or packaging for presentation.

Homemade infused vodkas make an original and fun gift for friends. A vodka tasting event is a good theme for a party and a good alternative to beer or wine tasting. You can challenge your friends to see who can make the most creative or tasty infusion.
