The City of Stonnington is more than just a destination for the entertainment precinct that is Chapel Street Precinct. A vibrant epicentre, a destination for entertainment, wining and dining, perhaps it's a little known fact that there are 11 Indigenous history markers situated in the City of Stonnington. They're located in Kooyong, Prahran, South Yarra and Windsor. The Yarra River plays a central role with four of the markers located along the Yarra Trail. Most of the land we now know as the City of Stonnington belonged to the Yalukit-willam clan.
These markers have historical information about local clans and their lifestyle, significant individuals, key locations and important events, and contain images depicting historic sites. In the 1830s, at least 40 Yalukit-willam people lived in the Stonnington area, including clan leader Derrimut. He lived in the neighbourhoods of Prahran and St Kilda for many years prior to his death in 1864. You'll find more information about the clans on the indigenous History Markers Guide which you can download here. The webpage has fuller details about each marker.

Fast forwarding to current times, have you seen The Royal Children's Hospital (RCH) Melbourne's fundraiser UooUoo's around Stonnington? There are 11 on the Art Trail to discover and they'll only be around for a short time until 21 March 2021. They will then be returned to be auctioned and sold, with proceeds going to the RCH. You'll find the handy map here, so take the opportunity to admire the original artwork lovingly painted for charity on each sculpture and read their stories at the base of the sculpture. Spare a thought for the sick children and make a donation.
Every little bit helps, just as it does, every time you visit Chapel Street Precinct. Post 2020 and lockdowns, local businesses are scrambling to get back on their feet. Your support and patronage could make the difference between a business surviving or not. It's time to get off the couch and visit all the outdoor dining and beer garden hotspots around the precinct. With outdoor dining being the new way to dine, there's more and more popping up along the hood with plans for Villages Squares in the making.
