Fancy a good curry in the Bayside area? Church Street in Brighton is home to a number of restaurants and one of those is the Indian Palace , where you can indeed choose from a large selection of curries.

The décor is not the traditional Indian of garish reds, blazing oranges and gold statutes. Instead the interior is a muted tone of sand coloured walls decorated by a few stenciled black elephant canvasses.

The wall of the main dining room downstairs (there is another area upstairs) incongruously holds a large flat screen TV. The TV was tuned to an American football game when we dined there, which was distracting and seemed out of character with the rest of the restaurant.

The food however was definitely on character and of the type you generally hope to find on the menu at your local Indian.

We opted to share entrees and mains and for starters we chose Tandoori platters consisting of Lamb cutlets, Chicken Tikka, Aloo Tikki and Onion Bhaji.

Whilst the entrees were on par and neither great nor disappointing, the main meals were a different story and exceeded expectations.

The curries we tried were the Beef Vindaloo (although we requested not too hot, it was still a little spicy for some of the more delicate taste buds in our group), Butter Chicken, Chicken Tikka Masala, Prawn Patia and Lamb Biryani.

Our group alternatively commented on the very generous servings being much larger than expected, the "aromatic and fragrant flavours," and the fresh tasting ingredients.

As mothers enjoying a girls night out when someone else is cooking, we were always going to be pretty easily satisfied.

Apart from the TV in the dining room, we did have one other issue with the night. Yes it was a quiet night – we managed to scare off every other table by about 8.30pm.

However despite the small the number of patrons, we still felt it was inappropriate for staff to be taking part in an on-line computer training program immediately behind us.

Overall we felt the food was a fine example of a Brighton icon living up to a 30-year reputation.
