When the Indian Ocean Brewing Company first opened a few years back, I have to confess I was a little excited. I've always found Perth a little lacking in beer gardens, so was delighted by the array of seating options al fresco on offer. For me the 'Indi', as it's fondly referred to by the locals bridged this beer garden gap for the Northern Suburbs and produced a classy place to go for a quick beer after work, a lunch with your mates, as well as a fairly decent restaurant to frequent on nights when you really can't be bothered to cook.
The Indi is a micro brewery offering a number of award winning handcrafted beers to the discerning beer drinker. Whilst not a connoisseur of beer, I have enjoyed the freshness of their pale ale on numerous occasions. If you don't know what beer to choose, opt for their tasting tray where you can try 4 of their beers for $16. Once you've found your beer of choice, keep an eye out for their regular happy hour; Monday - Friday between 5.30-6.30pm, certainly worth finishing work early to claim a $7 pint.
But it's not just about the beer. There's a good choice of food on offer at pretty decent prices; particularly if you time your visit around one of their special nights. Tuesday night cheap pizzas seem to be incredibly popular with the locals.
My Pick of the Specials Monday: Your choice of pasta for just $15 Tuesday:: $10 pizzas all day long, and they are delicious. We share one between two with a side salad. Wednesday: $18 burger & beer (lunch time only) - delicious burger topped with brie and served medium rare. Thursday: $18 for a steak sandwich with 2 tasting glasses of home brewed beer Friday: $20 for a jug of Pimm's all day long. (By my measures, 1 jug of Pimms will stretch to 5 glasses)
Outside of these specials you'll find a varied pub menu that lends itself to a fairly decent dinner out too. If you're out in a crowd, try the generous sharing platters; good value, size and a happy variety of components.
Of a day time, I have seen a number of children enjoying some lunch with their parents, and as the venue backs on to the communal enclosed playground of the Mindarie Marina, this might be an ideal place for a family lunch. Of an evening, I think the Indi becomes more of an adult zone, and would not consider that it is ideally suited to bringing the young ones along. Dependant upon the evening, there are often some live bands playing and I wouldn't imagine they'd enjoy the antics of children at this time.
All in all, this is a great pub/restaurant with a great outdoor space, plenty of room and very cheerful staff. The only downside I can reflect on from previous visits, is that the management of the Indi (every year) seem a little slow to catch on to the change in Summer to Winter weather, and you might find yourself a little chilly in the cooler months. There are patio heaters and some indoor heaters, but I've certainly been a little cool at times.
Do you know of any other great pubs with a beer garden? Let me know, I am always on the look out for new places to try.
