Nigel Spencer of Incredible Creatures (York) tours Western Australia with his amazing animal shows and is due to exhibit at the Perth Royal Show (September 28 to October 5) in Claremont Showgrounds, Perth.

Having first encountered Nigel's wonderful traveling animals several months back at the Farming Champions' Farmer on Your Plate event in Perth city, I recently got the chance to visit his York property and have a chat about his some of animal training secrets.

His fluffy white cat is happy to have birds perched on his head and sheep, goats, rabbits and dogs are incredibly well trained.

Hundreds of children visit his animals over the year and Nigel is truly incredible. How does he do it?

"Champions are born not made," says Nigel modestly, giving his animals credit.
[ADVERT]One example of this philosophy is Dan the Kelpie whom he found at a livestock market several years back. Dan was in a cage of unruly kelpie pups and Nigel noticed he was unusually calm. Now Dan can ride donkey with birds sitting on his head.

"He has turned out to be the most gentle, loving dog," says Nigel. "He won't jump on anyone, just sits quietly and shakes hands."

Nigel has a way with animals, but he also has a few little tricks up his sleeve.

He explains, how do you train a goose? Just before eggs are about to hatch, Nigel bonds with unhatched goslings. He carries the eggs around throughout the day, talking to them. Then, when the birds hatch, they follow him like they would the mother goose.
