In its earlier days Clare was called Inchiquin, but the name was changed (perhaps because Clare is easier to pronounce) and given to the reservoir that is located to the north of the town.

Inchiquin Lake is the main storm water facility in Clare and offers pleasant waterfront views for a nice gathering of family and friends, which is provided for with sheltered picnic areas, park benches, public toilets and rubbish bins.

There are many nice places to have a picnic in the Clare Valley, such as Blue Gum Lookout at Spring Gully Conservation Park or the lawn at Sevenhill Cellars , and is certainly one of them.

The lake is unsuitable for swimming, but there are plenty of other activities to partake in. It is set amid a beautiful big park, known as Melrose Park, where there is an abundance of well-established trees that provide shade and look like they have been there for a very long time.

It is a flat grassy area with lots of space - a great place to kick a ball around or play a game of chasey. The BMX track will appeal to many and there is a colourful playground featuring swings, slides and all the things that children enjoy playing on.

To explore the reserve, follow the walking trails that meander through the park and partially around the lake. You'll most likely encounter others out for a stroll or walking their dog. There are lots of seats along the way to rest and soak up the scenery.

Or if you time your visit just right, you could take a train ride around the park as it is home to Lakeside Railway, which is operated by the Clare Valley Model Engineers group. The miniature trains navigate a railway track that is over one kilometre long and includes a tunnel and several bridges.

There is a replica train station with a ticket booth, refreshment stand and railway mementos scattered throughout the park, such as the turnstile that was rescued from Blyth Railway Station.

Train rides are available to the public on the second and fourth weekend of each month. From November to March there is a twilight run on Saturday that starts at 6 pm. From April to October trains start running at 1.30 pm on Sunday. The ride goes for about 10 minutes and tickets cost just $2.

is popular with visitors and locals alike as there really is something to please everyone. There is ample car parking available within the park and on the adjacent streets. It is located on White Hut Road and Phoenix Avenue, which is near the Clare Country Club and Golf Course, in South Australia's Mid North region.
