In their Footsteps is a captivating theatre performance that held my attention from start to finish. It was was created by Ashley Adelman and Infinite Variety Productions, who sought to shine a light on the experiences of women who served during the Vietnam War in either a civilian or a military role. The problems and challenges of men who served in this war have been rightly acknowledged and examined, but women's experiences haven't really been explored and this performance seeks to change that.

In their Footsteps tells the real life story of five women, using verbatim theatre, which is based on the spoken word of real people, where performers use real peoples words exclusively. This allows for a multi-person account of events, and an understanding of the events from many perspectives. This style of theatre really brought home how they experienced the war, as these were the exact words that they had said or wrote.

The five women whose experiences have been included in the performance are librarian Ann Kelsey (played by Linda Nicholls-Gidley); recreational services provider Judy Jenkins Gaudino (Nola Bartolo); nurse Lily Adams (Suzann James) Donut Dollie Jeanne Christie (Sonya Kerr); and intelligence specialist Doris Allen (Rowena Robinson).

The actresses along with the director, Carly Fisher, did justice to the experiences of women in the Vietnam War. The performance hit the perfect balance, it was captivating and thought provoking without being too upsetting. The restrained use of music and news reels helped to add to the atmosphere. The set design was minimalistic with a scattering of bamboo and flowers designed to evoke the past rather than replicate it. The costumes were simple and modern to reflect that the women were speaking in the present about the past.

If understanding more about the experiences of women during the Vietnam War, is something that interests you, then I highly recommend seeing this production at the Adelaide Fringe Festival.
