I was always going to be conflicted about the movie In Like Flynn. Why? Because I am an Errol Flynn fan from way back, even flying south to Hobart in 2009 for the celebration of what would have been Flynn's 100th birthday.

Adapted from Errol Flynn's 1937 (first) novel, Beam Ends, the movie takes us from the goldfields of New Guinea in 1930, to the streets of Sydney and the Razor Gang in 1932, north to Townsville, with a return to New Guinea where Flynn is again lured by gold. Instead, he finds his gold as a big-time Hollywood movie star in the late 1930's and 1940's starring in Robin Hood, The Sea Hawke and They Died With Their Boots On.

Thomas Cocquerel plays Errol and is a good looking lad, capably supported by numerous well known Australian actors including Isabel Lucas and David Wenham. Sharing Flynn's adventures on board the Sirocco, stolen from Chinese Pirate, Grace Huang, are actors Corey Large, William Moseley, and Clive Standen.

To enjoy this film simply forget that this is supposed to be Errol Flynn before making it big in Hollywood. Instead, treat it as another of the Jewel of the Nile/ Indiana Jones Franchises. It will make the experience so much more palatable. Hang the brain at the door and just go with the adventures, misadventures and the crocodiles.
