In From the Side - Film Review (Cunard British Film Festival 2022)
In From the Side , directed by Matt Carter, best known for their visual effects on
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, is a truly captivating and must-see drama, with well fleshed out characters who you can't help but really feel for.
The writing and acting are superb, as the story centres around a scandalous relationship between two Rugby players; Mark, played by Alexander Lincoln (
Everything I know About Love) and Warren, played by Alexander King (
Charlotte: The Movie). The players are striving to do their best for their all-gay team to be seen as the professionals that they are, while sneaking around behind everyone's backs, including their current partners, to indulge in the uncontrollable passionate attraction they have for each other, which, if found out, could lead to serious consequences.
The visuals are absolutely beautiful, and it really shows that a lot of thought went into them, especially when we see the early morning fog rising over the trees surrounding the Rugby field - it pulls you even deeper into the story playing out before you.
While this is a thick drama, there is also a healthy smattering of comedy in the mix which really shines in their fellow teammate Pinky, played by Pearse Egan (
Cyber Bride), who is absolutely lovable and brings a lot of light to their scenes.
9.5/10
